Litigation Support - Coding Services

Litigation support systems usually have two parts - a viewer to display a document and a database to hold information about each document.

You can start with an empty database and add your own document details and, optionally, viewable versions of your documents.

For paper documents, this usually means a viewing an electronic file which is a scanned image of the document. The most popular formats are PDF and TIF (which may be single or multi-page).

For electronic documents, the choices are to view the documents in the application in which they were created (.DOCs in Word, .XLSs in Excel, .MSGs in Outlook etc) - this is called viewing the native format or electronic originals, or you may prefer, or may have been supplied with, some other electronic version of the file, such as a conversion to PDF or TIF 'images' of the electronic original.

In all cases, you can begin by having paper documents scanned and electronic files assembled or converted, and can then either code the entries yourself or have it done for you by a specialist service provider. We can put you in touch with suitable firm.

A specialist service provider can supply you with suitable images and:

an empty database

there is a blank item or document card which you can complete with the objective and optionally some subjective information), using the images as your source

objective coding

that is, basic factual information about documents (no more than goes into a conventional word processed list) including description, sender, recipient, date and source, leaving you to add subjective coding and to make decisions about relevance and privilege

full subjective coding

where a more detailed analysis of documents is done to your instructions

The coding cost on top of the software price will depend on the volume and condition of the source material and on what work is done.   The cost for a typical three page document will be approximately £1.50 to include identifying, de-collating and re-collating each document, scanning it and entering the primary coding.
